ECTC Announces Return to Campus Plan

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC) is joining the 15 other Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) schools in announcing its plan to welcome back students and staff to campus amid the COVID-19 crisis.

“Our goal is to provide as normal as possible experience for our students this fall,” said Darrin Powell, Interim Provost/Academic Dean. “A blend of on-campus face-to-face classes supplemented with virtual offerings along with heightened health and safety measures is the new normal in this era of higher education.”

This plan outlines actions taken since the decision was made to limit on-campus activity during the fall 2020 semester.

Stage 4 – August 1 – December 18, 2020

  • All student services open on campuses
  • Fall classes will begin on August 17, 2020 in a variety of formats including online, hybrid and traditional face-to-face
  • Actions in Stage 4 are subject to approval by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education and subject to change
  • College Workforce Solutions teams will be working to meet business needs and provide training for unemployed individuals. Colleges will continue to offer apprenticeships and other work-based learning opportunities.

Getting Ready for Monday, March 23

We understand you may have questions about the change to online classes that begins next week. Here are some ways we are ready to help you be successful in this new learning environment.

Student Services

  • Other than training for students who need assistance with online learning (see Blackboard Questions below), all in-person activities on campus have been cancelled until further notice. Students’ family or guests are not allowed on campus at this time.
  • Business hours have been reduced to 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday until further notice.
  • Student services are available virtually, preferably through email. A list of contacts is available on our Offices & Services webpage.
  • The only buildings that will remain open are the Regional Postsecondary Center (RPC) and Academic Technical Building (ATB).
  • For those coming to campus for Blackboard assistance, remember to practice social distancing and wash your hands regularly.
  • As ordered by Governor Andy Beshear, do not come to campus for any reason if you are sick or have been sick in the last 24 hours.

Blackboard Questions

  • ECTC staff will be available next week to help you learn to navigate Blackboard.
  • Location: Instruction will be held in Room 155 ATB
  • When: Monday, March 23 through Friday, March 27, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily.
  • If you have your own laptop, please bring it with you.
  • Additional online learning resources will be shared through our Student Information webpage.

Internet Access

  • ECTC has established two parking lots around campus that have strong enough WiFi to use a personal computer, tablet, or phone from the safety of your vehicle.
  • Ten spots have been reserved in Lot B (between JSO and the Library) and in Lot H (Between OTB and RPC) for use, but other surrounding spots could be used as well!

Walk-In Services Suspended

In response to recommendations regarding COVID-19, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College has taken additional steps to help insure the health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and all campus visitors. Services are available by phone and email only, until further notice. Walk-in service has been suspended indefinitely to comply with social distancing recommendations.

During this course transition period, we encourage our students to take advantage of the many resources that are available to help you be successful in your classes. Even though you may not have intended to be enrolled in online classes, we want to assure you that we, the College’s faculty and staff, will support you and assist you in every possible way. We believe in you! And we know by working together, you can successfully complete the Spring Semester! Additional student resources are available on our Student Information webpage.

ECTC COVID-19 Response Plan

  • Effective March 18th, employees will be working remotely except for essential personnel. Most student services will be available by phone and email. In-person appointments will not be available.
  • Classes will move to an online format effective Monday, March 23rd.
  • Select services will be available only to current students. Contact information for students needing assistance with online instruction will be communicated as soon as possible.
  • During the online instruction period, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will continue cleaning our college facilities as recommended by the CDC.
  • ECTC-sponsored or endorsed domestic or international travel is suspended until April 30. After that date, decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. All non-essential travel is cancelled until further notice, and travel outside the ECTC service area must be approved by the corresponding Chief Officer.
  • If you, as a student, faculty or staff traveled to a country with a CDC travel Warning - Level 3 or an area experiencing widespread or sustained transmission of COVID-19, upon return you will be asked to self-quarantine at your home for 14 days before you can return to campus.
  • Events have been suspended until further notice. Community partners planning to cancel an event that is currently scheduled, please contact your ECTC representative.

Keeping Our Campuses Healthy

  • We are cleaning and disinfecting all general work areas at least once daily with a highly effective, EPA registered disinfectant.
  • We are cleaning and disinfecting restrooms at least twice daily, focusing on hard surfaces such as door handles, faucets, etc.
  • Hand sanitizer units are available in ECTC buildings to reduce the spread of infection.

Tips to Stay Healthy

  • Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
  • Stay home if you are sick for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever.
  • Frequently clean your living area especially commonly-used surfaces such as doorknobs, refrigerator handles, remote controls, computer keyboards, countertops, faucet handles, and bathroom areas.
  • Monitor your health by checking for fever.

State of Kentucky COVID-19 Website and Hotline

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services has prepared resources on when to seek care, how to prevent becoming ill, who is most at risk, and up-to-date status of the COVID-19 situation in the state. A hotline for questions regarding the virus in the state is available at 800-722-5725. 

Kentucky Department of Public Health

The Kentucky Department for Public Health continues to closely monitor the international situation concerning the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). This respiratory disease was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China on December 31, 2019. Since that time, it has spread throughout China and to many other countries. Public health officials in Kentucky are monitoring individuals who meet certain exposure criteria to limit the introduction of COVID-19 in Kentucky. They are also are preparing for the possibility that the virus begins to spread in the commonwealth.

Kentucky Health Departments 

Colleges are encouraged to visit the websites of their local health departments and coordinate with them for guidance related to cases in their area.  If you live in Hardin, Larue, Meade, Grayson, and Washington counties, you're covered by the LIncoln Trail District Health Department.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the leading public health agency for the United States and has all the current information related to COVID-19.  You will find facts about symptoms of the virus and what to do if you become sick, tips on how to prevent the spread of the virus, and answers to frequently asked questions.

The U.S. Department of State

The U.S. Department of State provides an updated list of travel advisories.

This web-based interactive dashboard tracks the spread of COVID-19 in real time. It is hosted by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
