FAFSA Forward event offers free assistance with financial aid
Published on Apr 26, 2021
Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will host FAFSA Forward on Saturday, May 15, to help new and returning college students complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and provide information about affording college.
Socially distanced sessions will be held at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Advanced registration is required. To register, select your preferred time below.
The FAFSA is the first step to affordable or even free college as it allows students access to federal and state grants, federal student loans, scholarships and work study programs.
“Many students and families don’t complete the FAFSA because they don’t think they’ll qualify for grants such as the Pell Grant, and they don’t realize the FAFSA is an important step in applying for scholarships as well,” said ECTC Financial Aid Director Michael Barlow.
Those scholarships include the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship, which could make college tuition-free for students pursuing high-demand career fields in healthcare, advanced manufacturing, business and information technology, construction and trades, and transportation and logistics.
FAFSA completion rates among high school seniors are lagging. As of April 9, 48% of Kentucky high school seniors had completed the FAFSA, down 14.2% from last year, according to Form Your Future, a FAFSA tracker.
ECTC wants to help students catch up, Barlow said. FAFSA Forward is a free event for students — from graduating high school seniors to older students returning to the classroom — no matter where they plan to go to college.
“If you’re ready to go to college, we’re here to help you navigate the financial aid process,” Barlow said.
FAFSA Forward attendees should bring their 2019 taxes, social security card and, if a dependent, their parents’ 2019 taxes.
