Heartland Book Festival 2023

Our planning team is now looking ahead to the 2023 festival and we hope you will join us Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23, 2023.

Author Participation

Author participation in the Heartland Book Festival is by selection only. To be considered for selection, authors must complete our online application form and comply with our submission guidelines. The Heartland Book Festival is a partnership between ECTC, Hardin County Public Library, and Barnes & Noble College. Our selection team makes invitation decisions in consultation with these partners and we reserve the right to choose participants by direct invitation if we feel their work and their participation will enhance our event.

To be considered, authors should apply using the guidelines provided below.

Dates for Authors

December 1, 2022 - July 1, 2023: Timeframe for applications

February 1, 2023 - July 31, 2023: On a rolling basis, Heartland Book Festival will send invitations to participate to selected authors.

August 15, 2023: Deadline for invited authors to confirm participation

Complete our online application form to be considered for participation. Incomplete forms will not be considered.

2023 Author Application

Book Requirements

Our selection team will give preferences to books that:

  • Are available through a national distributor.
  • Are coded as returnable through the distributor.
  • Have an ISBN and a bar code.

We will reserve some participant spots for authors with books that are not available through national distributors/not coded as returnable, but those authors will have to complete an additional registration process with B&N College Vendor Relations in order to participate.

Participating Authors

If you are invited to participate in the Heartland Book Festival, we will require the following:

  • One copy of the author’s most-recently published book or an Advanced Reading Copy.
  • A book cover image from the most-recently published title for use in promotional materials.
  • The author’s headshot for use in promotional materials.
  • A participation confirmation.

All materials become the property of the Heartland Book Festival to be used and distributed according to the plans of festival partners.

All participating authors must be available to sign books from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23. Authors may take breaks throughout the day. Authors of children’s, middle-grade, or young adult books (elementary through high school audiences) will be required to participate in the student activities on Friday. They must be available to sign books from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 22.

Some authors may be invited to give a reading, lead a Q&A, participate on a panel, or lead a workshop. Our application form has a request for proposals if you are interested in leading a student workshop on Friday and/or an adult workshop on Saturday.

The Heartland Book Festival cannot cover travel expenses nor pay honoraria to most participating authors. By submitting an application, you are indicating that you or your publisher will pay for expenses related to the Heartland Book Festival unless separate arrangements have been made with the festival partners.

If you must cancel your participation in the Heartland Book Festival, notify the coordinator in writing no later than 1 month prior to the event date.
