Faculty Spotlight - Linda Howard
A student recently shared, “I had to hug her. She made me feel so comfortable and confident, and I’ve never felt that way about math!” “She” is Professor Linda Howard, known as much for her laughter and sense of humor as for her ability to help students navigate the challenges of mathematics. A math teacher at ECTC for 38 years, Linda has always put her students first, and she’s serious about doing whatever it takes to assure their success. For students who are willing to work, Linda is a stalwart cheerleader, encouraging and providing the personal attention they need.
To enhance her commitment to students, Linda has served in leadership roles at the college throughout the years. She was Chair of the Physical Sciences Division for 15 years, leading the division that includes math, physics, chemistry and IT. Linda was also elected by her colleagues to serve as faculty representative on ECTC’s Board of Directors for several terms.
In addition to her passion for her students and the college, Linda is committed to family, friends and her canine fur-family including Gil, Maggie and Zoey. They enjoy Linda’s outdoor activities, too, like hiking, canoeing, and exploring the country in her new camper. She has always stayed active in the community and enjoyed working with youth. From the early 1980s to mid ‘90s Linda officiated high school girls basketball and softball. A native of Summershade, KY, Linda regularly visits family there, enjoying camp-outs, pig roasts and fish frys on the family farm.
For 38 years Linda has effectively engaged her students in hands-on learning in her classroom. But she adds, with a customary chuckle, “I welcome change, especially if nothing is altered or different.” One thing we hope never changes is Linda Howard’s caring, fun-loving nature.
