ECTC launching Smarter Summer program with CPE grant

Published on May 24, 2021

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC) is launching a new initiative this summer to help students prepare for college and overcome barriers caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funded by a $97,391 summer bridge programming grant from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), Smarter Summer will provide a variety of in-person and virtual services that can be customized to meet students’ needs.

“Smarter Summer is an opportunity for students to get ahead on their educational goals with the help of academic, financial and other resources,” said ECTC President and CEO Dr. Juston Pate. “Attending ECTC is always a smart choice, and we look forward to partnering with CPE to encourage more students to enroll in college.”

In-person tutoring and smaller developmental summer classes will help students make greater progress in the Fall 2021 semester. Services include in-person tutoring to help students prepare for the KYOTE or TABE placement tests. Intensive developmental courses in reading, English and math also will be offered in person and online with class sizes limited to 10 students, allowing for additional individualized instruction.

Smarter Summer also includes an in-person section of ECTC’s First Year Experience course (FYE), which promotes college success strategies and helps students develop career goals.

Students taking classes, which begin June 7, may receive tuition scholarships, which will be awarded based on grant funding availability.

Additional Smarter Summer activities include financial literacy education, career services and multiple new student orientation options. All Smarter Summer participants will have an opportunity to work with a peer mentor during the 2021-22 academic year.

“The best thing about Smarter Summer is that students can choose the activities that meet their individual needs,” said Smarter Summer program coordinator Breanna Phillips. “It’s all about preparing students for the best possible start in Fall 2021.”

Smarter Summer is available to newly admitted or readmitted ECTC students. There are no age limitations. For more information, visit or contact Breanna Phillips at or 270-769-2371.
