Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman today visited ECTC to meet with students, faculty and staff and learn about the college’s Smarter Summer program. Smarter Summer, funded by a summer bridge program grant from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), is a program that helps new ECTC students prepare for college. It features several activities specifically designed to give students the best possible chance for success. Since Smarter Summer’s inception, ECTC has served more than 650 students. Elements of Smarter Summer include:
- New Student Convocation and Orientation is the best way to learn the ropes at ECTC. It allows students to become familiar with campus and provides information on available support such as face-to-face tutoring and outreach and workshops on career and financial services.
- CODE, or Creating Opportunities for Diversity in Education, is designed to support underrepresented minority and low-income students and offers resources for every aspect of succeeding as a college student. Events are scheduled throughout the summer.
- Summer classes in developmental reading, writing and math and a first-year experience course allow students to get a head start on college. Classes are limited to 10 students, which allows for more individualized attention.
- Open houses are held throughout the summer to welcome new students and assist them with transitioning to college.
- Peer mentors reach out weekly to Smarter Summer students to check in and provide assistance as needed.
- Week of Welcome (WOW Week) is a fun-filled event geared specifically for students during the first two days of classes in the fall semester. It features a variety of activities for students to make them feel engaged and comfortable, such as music, food trucks, games and door prizes.
“Our goal as a college is to help students create a successful future,” said Breanna Phillips, Smarter Summer Program Coordinator. “Smarter Summer offers the tools necessary to start college off the right way and build a strong educational foundation.”
