Metallica Scholar is ‘great representative for ECTC’
Electrical Technology student and Metallica Scholar Sophia George knew she wanted to work in trades and didn’t want a future filled with student debt. For these reasons, and the fact that the college is close to home, ECTC was the right fit.
“I didn’t want to get a four-year degree in something I may not ever use,” she said. “I like the hands-on work. A big reason I went into trades is that I can see the difference I made, and I can see the efforts of my work.”
George, who is studying the Construction Electrician track of Electrical Technology, earned the Metallica Scholars Scholarship because of her hard work in class and her close attention to detail.
“Sophia is a hardworking, dedicated student in the electrical field,” said Assistant Professor of Electrical Technology Dylan Barnes. “She is always early to class, very attentive, and engaged during lectures. She completes her assignments before they are due with diligent, detailed work that is showcased in the lab area with her neat and accurate wiring. She is a great representative for ECTC both in and out of class.”
George also is working part time with an electrical outfit, Barnes said, which will ensure that once she graduates, she will have achieved required hours to test for her electrical license.
“ECTC has opened up doors that otherwise wouldn’t be open if I didn’t have this education,” George said. “It’s provided resources to refer back to and I can see the everyday application of what I’m studying.”
Earning the Metallica Scholars Scholarship came as a surprise to George, because she didn’t think she was doing anything special to receive the recognition.
“I believe everything you do should be done with excellence and that your actions are a reflection of who you are as a person,” George said. “I could just do enough to get by and get a passing grade, but the more I put in now the more I get back. Why would I want less?”
