Agriculture student has passion for showing cows, sharing knowledge
ECTC agriculture student Davi Thompson knows cows, and specifically how to care for and prepare them for livestock shows. Her interest extends to sharing that knowledge with younger future farmers.
“This is my 12th year showing cows,” she said. “There’s a lot more to it than most people think.”
Last fall, Thompson volunteered with Hardin County Extension Service 4-H Club Livestock Club. She worked with members ages 8-14, providing an overview of what it takes to show cows. She discussed everything from daily care and show etiquette, to hair care, halters and nutritional needs.
Thompson grew up on a farm in Green County, which is what led her to study animal science and sustainable agriculture at ECTC.
“Agriculture is what I know most about,” she said. “I live on a cattle farm with two horses and two goats.”
While she has not yet decided on a career path, after working in a veterinary office she is considering becoming a veterinary technician.
“Davi is an exemplary student who exhibits a true love and passion for agriculture,” said ECTC Agriculture Program Coordinator Ben Smith. “Not only is she a student here at ECTC, but she also holds a part-time job and is an entrepreneur. Davi is a wonderful example of the kind and quality of student we strive to have in the ECTC agriculture program and will no doubt do great things in the future.”
Thompson was drawn to ECTC because she knew she didn’t want to attend a large college with large classes where she wouldn’t know anyone.
“The small classes and the ability to get to know my professors is better suited to my personality. I like that I can talk about farm stuff all the time with Mr. Smith,” she said. “Plus, ECTC is a lot more affordable than other colleges.”
Thompson continues to help with FFA in Green County, teaching students about different programs and competitions and about livestock judging. She also works with students on earning FFA degrees.
“What I like about working with younger kids is helping them and teaching them what I know,” she said. “I try to motivate them, to teach them to try their hardest and put their hearts into it. As long as they try their best and don’t give up, that will make all the difference.”
