ECTC celebrates First Generation Week

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College celebrated the third annual First Generation Week this week, highlighting students whose unique obstacles can make it more difficult for them to succeed at college. Nearly one in five ECTC students is considered first generation, meaning neither parent holds a college degree. The college hosted events that raised awareness of the barriers these students may face and fostered connections between students and community members with similar experiences.
“Being a first-generation student means taking advantage of the opportunities available and doing my best to prepare a good future for myself and my family,” said ECTC student Emma Carter.” My family is important to me, and I want to be able to provide for them. College is my path to do so.”
The events, sponsored by Abound Credit Union, included a First-Gen Coffee and Conversation, where students mingled over breakfast and received ECTC First Generation mugs; and a panel discussion and lunch that touched on challenges and successes first-generation faculty, staff, alumni and students have experienced.
“ECTC has built a comprehensive support system that is key to the success of first-generation college students,” said ECTC Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Corina Langford. “This week we were honored to celebrate the accomplishments of these students who are building new cycles of success for themselves and their families.”
