Art
Do you draw or sketch? Charcoal or graphite? Do you live in ECTC's service area OR DO YOU HAVE A CONNECTION TO OUR COLLEGE? If so, read on.
In Spring 2025 we began publishing some art in our journal, which comes out each spring. We'd love to publish a few pieces from the community.
What to submit:
We're looking for black and white art, usually graphite or charcoal. You'll need to take a picture of your own art. When you take a picture of the image, the file (jpg) must be 300 dpi or greater. Some cell phones can do this but some can not. Artists may submit only up to 3 entries.
How to submit:
You can use theheartlandreviewpress@ectc.edu to submit your work, but a file that's 300 dpi or larger also may not travel by email, so you may need to send a link or even a drop box. Some artists have given us a jump drive; you can drop off a jump drive at the Fine Arts & Humanities Office or make an appointment to meet with the Editor in Chief (contact her through the email above).
There is a form for you to complete and sign which gives us permission to print your work and asks for your bio. You can request that form through our email.
We realize this process is a little cubersome. This is our first year printing art so hopefully in our second or third year we'll be able to streamline the process.
When to submit:
We will accept submission all year long; however, any received after July 4 will most likely appear in an issue over 18 months away.
General Submission Information and Rules
By submitting, the entrant agrees to abide by all contest rules published below.
If the entrant is under 18, please request a copy of the special guardian/notary form; those under 18 can still submit but we must have a guardian approval with a notary. That is a special form. Your local bank usually has a free notary.
All entries must be original works by the entrant.
Plagiarism, which includes the use of third-party poetry, song lyrics, characters, or another person’s universe, without written permission, will result in disqualification. Works generated or created by computer software and/or artificial intelligence will be disqualified. Excessive violence or sex and the use of profane, vulgar, racist or offensive words, determined by the judges, will result in the story being rejected.
Artists may submit only up to 3 entries.
Changes / Revisions: We can not make changes once you have submitted.
Copyright: THRP retains first North American serial rights and may use the submitted material to promote the The Heartland Review and website in perpetuity. Upon publication, rights revert back to the writer.
While we accept simultaneous submissions, please email us to withdraw your work if it is published elsewhere in the United States or if you use First North American Serial Rights.
Cost:
Free submissions for all open calls.
We do gladly accept donations to our publication. You can make a donation by clicking here: https://alumni.kctcs.edu/g/give-to-ectc
Prize/Payment:
Because we do not charge for submission, there is not a monetary payment for this
contest.
THRP pays 1 contributor copy mailed to the authors of published works who have a United States Postal Service Address. We can not mail to international addresses at this time, so writers who live outside the U.S. - whose mail requires additional processing and forms - often provide an address of friends, relatives, and or their U.S. Consulate.
All writers can purchase copies through Amazon on our Shop page.
Publication Timeline:
The Heartland Review comes out in late Spring. If you are published with us and you
have a United States Postal Service address, we will mail you one. If you wish to
buy additional copies, we do publish on Amazon and you can order from Amazon. Our
shop page has our Amazon links.
Disclaimer:
THRP is not an independent press. We are subject to the governance of our college ECTC which in turn is part of a larger entity the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. As such, we are not able to enter into a legally binding agreement.
We look forward to viewing your work!
