Groundbreaking Marks New Era for FSH and ECTC

Family Scholar House is thrilled to share in the celebratory groundbreaking for its new Elizabethtown campus. The celebration held Dec. 11 at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC), marks a historic milestone for the Family Scholar House community as the campus will provide stable affordable housing for 48 student parents in the Elizabethtown community.

“Family Scholar House enthusiastically partnered with ECTC on this new affordable housing campus because of our shared commitment to fostering educational opportunities for student parents and their children,” said Cathe Dykstra, president and CEO of Family Scholar House, Inc. “Stable housing and comprehensive services to address life’s challenges promote retention, persistence, and graduation, and ultimately deliver a prepared workforce and a bright future for families.”

“The Family Scholar House at ECTC is a tremendous step forward in helping student parents secure stable housing and overcome one of the greatest barriers to education and family-sustaining careers,” said Dr. Juston Pate, ECTC President and CEO. "While ECTC is the No. 1 provider of postsecondary education and training in our region, we need powerful partners like Family Scholar House, the City of Elizabethtown and so many others throughout our community to provide the holistic support our students need.”

The new facility will add 48 two- to three-bedroom units near the ECTC campus. This milestone will provide stable housing for student parents, just steps away from campus, to continue their education and achieve lifelong self-sufficiency with their families.

“We’re working hard to build our New Kentucky Home, where opportunities and prosperity are possible for every single person. That’s why Britainy and I have been proud to volunteer with Family Scholar House for many years as they’ve built a national model for helping single parents pursue their education,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “At the Home for Hope, student parents will be close to classes at ECTC, as well as child-care facilities, while they earn their degree and work toward their dreams. Thanks to Family Scholar House, ECTC, the Kentucky Housing Corporation and every community partner that is supporting this project.”

“As a longtime collaborator with Family Scholar House, PNC Bank is committed to helping provide tangible solutions to the affordable housing challenge facing our communities,” said Kristen Byrd, PNC regional president for Kentucky. “Our investment of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits equity to this development is reflective of that commitment, and we look forward to seeing the life-changing impact Family Scholar House will create for Elizabethtown.”

"Today's groundbreaking demonstrates that our community is committed to working together to clear paths and create opportunities that will make a difference for generations,” said Jennifer Swope, Home for Hope campaign chair and ECTC Foundation board member. “We're thankful to every organization and individual who helped make this vision a reality. I've always been proud to be a member of this community, and the success of the Family Scholar House at ECTC campaign shows our community really is a special place."
